Aphrodite Salt & Pepper Mills in Honduran Rosewood Burl

This is a set of Mills in Honduran Rosewood Burl, one of the world's rarest woods and one of the six "Holy Grail" burl woods.

Honduran Rosewood Burl is highly prized and extremely difficult to obtain in large blanks.  When I was offered the opportunity to purchase 8 blanks a few months ago this was the first time my woods supplier had been able to obtain this wood in 10 years of offering exotics and super exotic woods.  This wood is also extemely tricky to work with, being brittle and hard, with irregular grain.  The first two sets I made sold before I could publish them on this site. 

This is a very nice set with good proportions.  The set pictured on the left is not the one offered but is very similar is color and proportions.  The surface finish is buttery smooth. This set is offered at a price of $1,200.   SOLD   

 Moderna Salt & Pepper Mills in Snakewood

This is another nice set of Snakewood Mills recently completed with excellent figure.

These mills came from a single snakewood log.  The blanks were over-sized so the Pepper Mill on the left has a finished diameter of 3-1/4 inches at the base, while the Salt Mill on the right has a diameter of 2-7/8 inches.

This is a nice set of Snakewood Mills with very good figure.

These mills came from two different logs.  The Pepper Mill on the left has very good figure, while the Salt Mill on the right has excellent figure.  The size is typical with a finished max diameter of about 2-3/4 inches.

Tall Moderna Pepper Mill in Snakewood 

Snakewood is the most expensive wood in the world and alds one of the hardest and heaviest.  This mill is also the lerges heaviest and most expensive Mill that I have made to date. 

It was made from a solid snakewood log and measures 14 inches tall, is almost 3-1/2 inches in diameter at the base, and weighs over 44 ounces.  A spectacular showpiece.

Moderna Salt  & Pepper Mill set in rare Desert Ironwood

Desert Ironwood only grows in the Sonoran Desert and is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain, particularly in sizes large enough for Pepper Mills.  In fact, highly burl figured wood of this species is considered one of the five "Holy Grail" burl woods and is almost unobtainable at any price.

This mill does not have a mate to make a set, but it does have some interesting figure and some light contrasting sapwood to give it some extra character.The grain alignment from head to body is also very good.

Moderna Salt & Pepper Mill set in Masur Birch

Masure Birch comes form Sweden is prized for its unique "Flame-Stitch" type figure and for its exceptional chatoyance.  These mills are turned from whole log sections and the finished dimater at the base is about four inches.  The mills have been polished to 1200 grit and the appearance of great depth is almost unreal.  Masur Birch is difficult to obtain in the necesarry size, and with exceptional figure such as this.
